Did you always want to learn dancing but you believed that “it’s too late now”? It’s not! ballet and break dancing may demand youthful body, but there are lots of types of dancing that can be mastered successfully as an adult. In reality, I am aware of women that have discovered dancing in their forties and been able to dance on stage!

The obvious option is partner dancing, and there is a lot out there: ballroom, Latin, Street Latin, salsa, rock’n'roll, Ceroc (modern jive), tango and so on. All of them are very well suited to older beginners, because you can begin “performing” them at dances almost straight away.

The big stumbling block is the fact that, obviously, you can’t perform these dance styles on your own. You don’t need a partner to go to class – most dance schools tailor their classes for single people – but if you want to showcase your abilities on the dance floor, you’ll need someone to go dancing with.

The very first difficulty is locating a partner who’s as good (or as bad!) a dancer as you are. Social dancing needs close cooperation between the 2 main performers, therefore you have to be on each other’s wavelength: for this reason, discovering the right dance partner is often as hard as finding the right marriage partner! (Naturally, social dancing is one method of accomplishing just that!). In fact, thanks to the closeness of the dance relationship, a married male or female could find that their non-dancing spouse doesn’t approve.

Some women may well not find social dancing fits their demands, anyway. In any types of partner dancing, the man is the leader: he decides the choreography (which steps come next). The woman must follow. If you are a women who wants to express her creativity, you could possibly feel this doesn’t give enough room for self-expression.

If it is you, you can also find dance forms that one could consider.

Belly dancing i a good fit for mature women, as the moves are so natural. Flamenco doesn’t need flexibility although the rhythm can be difficult to pick up.  folk dance is also worth a look and is very sociable, as is courtly dancing.

Finally, if you are having problems finding dance classes of any type, don’t overlook exercise classes like Zumba or Jazzercise, or aerobic dancing classes. These aren’t “real dancing”, nonetheless they feature choreographed routines and this can be very enjoyable.

The bottom line is if your dream is to dance, it is possible!
